Welcome to Coastal Restoration Advocates, LLC

Coastal Restoration Advocates is proposing to supply 50 million gallons per day (MGD), 56,000 acre-feet per year (AFY), of water for Southern California by retrofitting 455,000 existing urinals in commercial and public restrooms in the region with waterless urinals.

Coastal Restoration Advocates (CRA) will provide our customers, public and commercial building owners and operators, with installed waterless urinals at new or existing building sites at no charge. CRA’s Waterless Urinal project will be funded entirely through the MWD $250 per acre-foot incentive, providing low-cost water, high-paying jobs, and water security for the region. Customers will be responsible for maintenance, but will receive 100 percent of the economic benefit of reduced water use and wastewater treatment savings.

Water produced will require no additional delivery pipelines or other water infrastructure; it will not draw water from natural water bodies. The project will reduce regional wastewater production by 50 million gallons per day – eliminating associated energy demand and environmental impacts. We estimate this project will reduce regional energy demand by over 10 megawatts – i.e., generate 10 ‘negawatts’ of power.

Southern California Sustainable Water Supply / Waterless Urinal Project

Water Supply

The 455,000 urinals planned in this project will provide a new, ongoing supply of 50 million gallons of water per day to the region. It will also eliminate 50 million gallons of wastewater per day.

Proven Affordable Technology

Waterless urinals are proven, affordable, and currently in use throughout California. Ten companies are now making waterless urinals offering altogether more than 30 models. A single waterless urinal can save 45,000 gallons of water per year.

Financing

The program will be financed through a $187 million bond, which will be paid by a $250 acre/foot/year direct rebate from the Metropolitan Water District. Because waterless urinals require no ongoing energy input to generate water savings, and upkeep and maintenance will be the responsibility of the site owner/operator, there are no ongoing costs beyond installation associated with the project.

Energy use

The 50,000 gallons per day of water saved will require no ongoing energy input and will result in reduced energy consumption – more than 10 megawatts – because of reduced wastewater treatment demand.

Job Creation

The waterless urinal project will create an estimated 960 new construction manufacturing, and plumbing installation jobs (broken down as 190 for construction, 120 for manufacturing, and 650 for installation). Maintenance jobs for service employees are not even included in this estimate. In addition, Coastal Restoration Advocates would bring one or more manufacturer to Southern California by requiring that the urinals are locally manufactured. This project will create high paying jobs in construction, manufacturing and installation. Recycling of disposed urinals is also a potential source of jobs.

Water Security

Waterless urinals are a water conservation measure that requires no new water source, no additional transportation, and no ongoing energy. Water saved through waterless urinals is simply left in the existing infrastructure systems, available immediately to meet other demand. There is zero risk to the viability of system from fluctuating energy costs. The risk to water supply from natural disaster is unchanged.

Water and Air Pollution

Water quality will be improved through pollution prevention, including 50 MGD that will not be drawn from natural sources, requiring no treatment, and 50 MGD wastewater that will no longer be produced.
